Eating for a rest day

Today was my rest day. No exercise, no training… just a day to allow my body to heal. Many would say these days are more valuable than the days you’re in the gym (as long as you did actually spend time in the gym <grin>). Aside from letting your natural healing process occur, this is the time your muscles can rebuild (grow).

I try to eat differently on these days from days when I plan on hitting the gym, knowing that I am not going to burn calories at the same rate. As a result, I also try to adjust my portions accordingly while aiming to supply my body with smart nutrients. When possible, I try to eat a bit lighter for dinner if I find myself eating later in the evening than normal.

Tonight’s cuisine choice was just as much about convenience as it was nutrition, but it works for me: Gardenburger’s Portabella Veggie Burgers (x2) without buns, broiled seasoned brussel sprouts and corn on the side. I am no diet expert but I find this is a great way to “get in my greens” and all the vitamins and minerals they supply.

Next time I may substitute the packaged burgers for actual portobello mushroom caps, marinade ’em, grill ’em, and have an entirely unprocessed meal.
